Cure Your Putting Yips and Perfect Powerful Putting (2 mp3)
Cure your yips in one hour
Now, I know what you’re thinking – that this is impossible, that this is too good to be true. But I can assure you that this can be achieved, with a little bit of appropriate help.
First, let’s look at what exactly is happening when you have the yips. You are standing over the ball, putter (or wedge) in hand, you take your practice stroke, your logical mind tells yourself that you can do this, that you can hit the ball as you want to, and then your wrist involuntarily jerks and you either mishit the ball or miss the ball altogether. You then feel annoyed/upset/frustrated and your brain records this latest experience of the yips, adding this to your pattern of past yipping experiences, confirming and reinforcing the pattern, thereby creating even more certainty of it happening next time.
And so next time, you stand over the ball in a similar situation as the last one in which you yipped (your last putt or your last putt on that hole, or your last putt in a competition, or your last putt in front of someone, etc), and your brain takes in the situation via your senses, it scans for a pattern recognition, recognizes the situation and immediately responds in a similar manner.
I often say that thought creates emotion which creates action/bodily response/bodily symptom. This, in actual fact, isn’t the full story. Wherever you are, whatever situation you are faced with is perceived by you via your senses – touch, taste, sight, sound, and hearing – as your brain receives these perceptions, it immediately scans for a “pattern match”. So, if you come to a door, for example, your brain will take in what it looks like and then seek a pattern match of something similar, and so will come up with the fact that it is a door and therefore it knows how a door operates. This is how your mind works; it stores patterns. When you sit in the driving seat of your car you will immediately activate your “driving pattern match” and so instinctively know how to drive. When you go to the airport you will automatically search for a pattern match with airports/flying and respond in accordance with your learned behavior.
If you have had a bad experience flying, or have learned to feel afraid of flying, your “pattern matching mechanism” will immediately recreate this same emotional response…..and you feel and act accordingly; without logically thinking about it….you just act instinctively. Now this is very useful in a case where you need to feel fear, but not when you don’t. Not only that, whenever you feel “primitive emotions” – those of fear or anger – your brain immediately gets locked into instinctive behavior patterns and you CANNOT access the higher, logical thinking parts of your brain. (You may have heard the phrase “anger makes you stupid”.) This is to be contrasted with patterns which do not trigger such primitive emotions, in which case, there is a natural flow of interaction between the primitive areas of the brain and the logical areas of the brain – i.e. you can think logically about what you are experiencing and modify your behavior accordingly. Therefore patterns of behavior which do not elicit primitive emotions can be constantly modified as your conscious mind applies logic to the situation – such is the natural adaptivity of our brains.
Thus what actually happens in your brain when you perceive a situation is that this perception triggers off the pattern matching mechanism, and this in turn does one of two things – if it matches up to a pattern associated with primitive emotions it responds immediately with the freeze/fight/flight response, or if it matches up to a less emotional pattern, you r logical, thinking mind gets involved in the interaction so as to produce an appropriate reaction.
Applying this to your experience of the yips, I’m sure you can now understand better why all that logical talking to yourself (“You can do this”,”it’s just a putt,”” there’s no need to feel anxious”, etc) simply doesn’t work – your brain is effectively locked into its primitive response as soon as the pattern matching takes place. The two parts of your brain cannot communicate at this time and therefore you cannot modify your response to the situation.
You may be wondering how you actually got the yips in the first place. So think back now to the first time you experienced the yips….and ask yourself what you perceived with your senses and what the likely pattern match might have been. Perhaps you associated the situation with another one in which you felt pressured, which may or may not be golf related. Perhaps you felt a bit anxious, and lost your rhythm thereby creating a jerky stroke….and then remembered that pattern match the next time…and created the onset of the yips.
Whether or not you can remember your first yipping experience, or even if you can work out how or why it began is not actually relevant to the cure. What is relevant is that you understand that in order to change your pattern match you have to access the emotional/primitive part of your brain. Using logic will very, very rarely affect a cure because your logical mind is locked out before it can interact in the experience.
The million dollar question is how do you gain access to and modify this primitive/emotional part of your brain? It is has been proven unequivocally in medical/psychological research studies that the purpose of the REM (trance) state, which everyone accesses for approximately 2 hours every night (commonly known as dreaming), is to allow your brain to modify such primitive emotional pattern match responses. And it has also been proven that one cannot survive very long without this restorative action taking place. Therefore, whether you are aware of dreaming or not, be assured that you do.
But how can you access a similar state intentionally and then guide a desired pattern modification? The answer is, quite simply, hypnosis. Hypnosis is the same state – the same brain wave activity can be seen as when in the REM (trance), dreaming, state each night. Thus everyone (yes, EVERYONE) is hypnotizable. You already use hypnosis every night as you dream. Hypnosis is natural and normal, so natural in fact that many do not realize that they are hypnotized.
Once in this REM (trance) state, it is easy to alter for the better your instinctive emotional response and behavior, just as your brain does this automatically each night while you dream. You can literally “rewind” the pattern you are running, just as you can rewind a movie, and then replay it in your mind in a modified manner – seeing yourself as you want to be and creating a positive pattern of behavior, imprinting this in your primitive, emotional mind for future use.
Once this primitive fear has been eliminated in relation to your putting, your brain needs to be retrained to send relaxed signals to your wrists and hands, and I have developed PNPP™ (psycho neuro physiological programming) to do exactly this. You will become a master of this art simply by following the instructions on these hypnosis recordings.
