If you have never thought of hypnosis as soul food then it's time to step back and see it from a different angle. Most people who know a little bit about this art appreciate that it is a natural state, a state of relaxation, and that it allows access to the inner workings of your mind, and thereby enables change; Change in terms of relief from tension or conflict, and also in terms of opening up a greater ability to succeed. All of this is food for the soul. Science shows us that as one relaxes in hypnosis chemicals are secreted from the brain which make us have a natural feel good factor, just as these same endorphins are stimulated when you feel sunlight upon your body. Hypnosis is, as the title suggests, a means of sunbathing for your soul.
It would seem that most weeks there is an article some place or another highlighting that a celebrity has visited a hypnotherapist for weight loss, or stopping smoking, or perhaps to gain a sporting edge or to cure a phobia. Whatever a celebrity does always creates media attention, but when a famous person sees a hypnotherapist the media circus escalates and it frequently creates front page news. Why is this? Is hypnotherapy really perceived as THAT unusual?
Only optimists play poker. Why would a pessimist even bother? There would be no point in even trying. After all, poker is a game that's all about winning. Gambling is all about winning. And a serious gambler (or an amateur who takes the game seriously) is always on the lookout for a new technique which could stack the odds in their favor.
Now I had a funny experience a few weeks back. I'm a hypnotherapist and I sell a lot of mp3 downloads from my website. I had an e-mail from a would-be customer asking why I sold cds for winning poker and not for winning at the dog races....Interesting concept.
People have often used the analogy that the human body is like a car. It needs the correct grade fuel to enable it to work at its best, it needs exercising on a reasonably frequent basis, and a check up once in a while. Whilst we all know what we should do in terms of diet and exercise, few of us act in accordance with that knowledge. Not only that, we tend to almost completely ignore our "wiring", and this is just as important, if not more so, than the more visible outer coating of the human body. A car that has nothing underneath the hood may be very sleek to view, but is of no use for any of its intended purposes! Similarly we all know the domino effect caused when a fuse is blown.
What makes some people keep going when most others have become dejected, exhausted and disillusioned about their chances of ultimate success? What is going on in the inner workings of one's mind which makes them know that they should keep going when the far easier and the apparently more sensible option is to step back and retire gracefully with a crooked smile pasted upon your face?
Whether you call it PMS or PMT doesn't matter one iota; It's the bane of many women's lives, lying in wait once a month to turn one's mood and body upside down and inside out, like a volcano smoldering away, ready to erupt at any moment. And let's not forget this volcano's impact upon friends and family, who wait in fear of the inevitable approach of molten lava, tiptoeing around you as if treading on egg-shells!
If you have children you'll know just how difficult it is to get them to sit still. You're fighting an uphill battle as they wiggle and wriggle and finally escape from your restraining clutches. And to what end? What are they seeking? What has caught their interest? You watch them running around in the garden, climbing trees, or playing hide and seek, or tag, or playing cowboys and Indians, or enacting any number of imaginary plays and scenes; And of course there's your child's first attempts at amateur gymnastics, ranging from seeing if they can chew their toes, or trying to stand on their head to doing a cartwheel or the splits! A child will happily spend all day in the pool, splashing around, trying to swim under water, or to hold their breath and touch the bottom, or make the biggest splash as they dive-bomb next to you, a gleeful expression on their face! You and I were just the same as every other little girl or boy; we didn't see all that as "exercise" did we?
The prospect of dating anew can seem incredibly daunting to even the most outgoing and confident person. And there is the added issue of just how do you meet someone?; Where can you go to meet new faces? It is all well and good when you are at college or university; there, you meet hundreds of people just by being in that environment. The same is true when you start a new job in a big organization. When you are married and have children you get to know other mums and dads through their children; but this doesn't help you if you have been in the same job for a few years, your children have grown up and you've just gotten divorced. All of your friends are couples. Now what do you do? How do you get onto the dating start line, let alone "get past go"?
There's nothing worse than having to get up in the morning after a sleepless night, trying to go about your day to day tasks, feeling as if you are running on an empty tank; you can't think straight, your body feels heavy and all you want to do is curl up in a ball and sleep. And yet, by the time darkness falls, your body seems to waken up and you just know that yet another sleepless night awaits you. A self-fulfilling prophesy then ensues.
In the Western world we have moved further and further away from the examination of mental processes and how they impact upon the way in which our lives unfold. This can be seen in many areas of our lives; we abrogate responsibility for how we feel to circumstances, other people - anything and everything other than ourselves and how we think.
