People who are afraid or phobic about operations would do anything to overcome their feelings of dread and trepidation; and these individuals often seek the services of a hypnotherapist through sheer desperation. Most are unaware of what hypnosis really is; rather, they are just trying hypnotherapy as a last resort...and they are usually pleasantly amazed at how great they feel after their session.
Unfortunately, most people who are preparing for an operation have no idea of the many ways in which hypnosis can be of very great assistance.
A prospective client telephoned me a few weeks ago and asked an interesting question. Her first question, however, was "what do you charge per session?" Now, this is not usually the best query to start with. From my perspective, as a therapist, I want to ensure that my clients make an informed choice about their therapy. Surely a question about how the therapy works, how I would approach her issues, or what is my experience of her type of issues should be rather more important than cost? A person seeking therapy needs to be committed to the therapy and you cannot be committed if you do not know about it. It is important to understand how the therapy works and to believe that this type of therapy is right for you AND that the therapist himself is right for you...or the therapy is unlikely to be successful.
Medical research is now proving the effectiveness of hypnosis in making for a relaxed pregnancy and far more comfortable delivery. This article is simply intended as a brief guide to how hypnosis can help in many different ways, ranging from its successful use in prolonging pregnancy, reducing complications and thereby preventing premature delivery (Schwartz, 1963, Omer 1986, Omer 1987) to the reducing of delivery time by a whopping 2 to 4 hours (Jenkins and Pritchard, 1993).
Most parents just hope that their new baby will go to sleep easily and sleep for longer than just a couple of hours at a time. You can have one child who quite literally "sleeps like a baby" and another who frets and cries their way through the night whilst you, the parent, drag yourself around in a ghost-like state of sleep deprivation for endless weeks and months. There seems to be neither rhyme nor reason as to why one child is different from another in their sleep patterns; and the parent is subjected to the luck of the draw...But is this really the case? We know that children have their own individual emotional type, but even so, surely there is SOMETHING that you can do to at least make it more probable that your new baby will sleep well?
You can cure your yips in just one hour.
Now, I know what you're thinking - that this is impossible, that this is too good to be true. But I can assure you that this can be achieved, with a little bit of APPROPRIATE help. You don't need to spend $200 on a new putter!
Was golf originally played by men, or did it originate as a women's game? (Heaven forbid!!)
Sometime in 2008 I visited the Ming exhibition at the Asian Arts museum in San Francisco. My interest was piqued by a hand scroll in colored ink on silk, exquisitely beautiful, which featured in part the "beauty and pleasantry" of the Court ladies' lives in the Inner Palace. This wonderful scroll, attributed to Du Jin (1465-1500), depicted the ladies going about their favorite pastimes, including the serving of snacks (no surprise there!), kicking a ball (Did ladies of that period really play soccer or, better still, American football? - my mind is really going overtime trying to picture that one!!!)...and, even more curious...playing a GOLF game...Wow!
Many people are curious about hypnosis and wonder will "it" work for them? There are too many references to hypnosis in dictionaries, encyclopedias, articles, books or on the internet to do them justice in one short article. That said, my aim here is to cut through hyperbole and get straight to the point. I want, in just a few short paragraphs, to remove the all too popular myths and misconceptions regarding the natural and normal state of hypnosis and instead to show you not only what hypnosis really is, but how it is in fact ESSENTIAL in our lives.
Like many others, I was lured into psychology in part due to the hundreds of thousands of "self-help" books which are freely available today. Whether you are in the airport or the high street every book shop has a healthy selection of these tomes. During my day to day work with clients I am often asked to recommend a book which might provide inspiration, direction or hope in their individual situation. All of these books convey an important message to the interested reader.

Those who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder know only too well its very real physical manifestations - symptoms include depression, lethargy and tiredness, anxiety, loss of libido, cravings for carbohydrates and sweet foods. The symptoms in their turn tend to produce a vicious cycle of negative effect. Cravings lead to weight gain and more depression. Lack of energy leads to sleeping late and not getting as much light in the morning, feeling sluggish leads to lack of motivation to exercise, no social interaction leads to feeling more down.... And so on.
